Today in History

  • 1789: George Washington is inaugurated as the first president of the United States in New York City.
  • 1803: The United States more than doubles its size with the Louisiana Purchase, a vast territory bought from France for $15 million.
  • 1812: The Territory of Orleans enters the Union as the 18th state, the state of Louisiana.
  • 1939: Franklin D. Roosevelt is the first U.S. president to appear on television when NBC begins regular broadcasting with live coverage of the opening of the New York World's Fair.
  • 1945: Refusing to surrender after Germany is defeated by Allied forces at the end of World War II, German dictator Adolf Hitler commits suicide in his Berlin bunker.
  • 1975: The Vietnam War ends when Duong Van Minh, president of South Vietnam, surrenders unconditionally to North Vietnamese communist forces.

Minutes

Pres Andy called for a motion for the last blast donation, moved seconded - voted

He also called for a motion on a gift for the District Conference silent auction, moved, seconded - voted $100, a gift certificate from an Arlington business was suggested, Bill will look into it.

Paul Harris Night Tickets will be used as the drawing for a Red Sox memorabilia door prize so be sure anyone you sell a ticket to signs the back of the ticket.

Ken reports Maryellen is the 18th Arlington Rotarian who has made the Paul Harris Foundation donation for this year.

Correction Memorial Day is May 26th so the flag sales would be on May 24, 2008.

Andy is planning a Board meeting date TBA, next Tuesday is in conflict with B&G Club Dinner

Bill reports GSE team from Brazil arrives today, Reception Friday, expect they will visit us week of 5/18 and be at our meeting 5/21.

No speaker next week we will be discussing Club business; Town Day and Chamber of Commerce

Greg Introduced our speaker today, Lisa Deely Smith a founding member of Franco's group helpwunlang.org Lisa delivered and excellent slide show and movie clip presentation about her trip to Wulang and progress made since January when Franco visited us.
