Following is Dave Garriepy proposal for us to provide a stipend of $100 per month for a student to live in and go to school in Arlington. This letter describes the program and our part in it.
Dear Friends, Relatives, Fellow Rotarians, Arlington Residents, and Interested Supporters,
The Arlington Rotary Club, through a program developed by Rotary Youth Exchange, and locally through the Rotary International 7930 District Long-Term Exchange Program, is sponsoring a Rotary Exchange Student for the 2008-2009 school year at Arlington High School. Claudia Sanchez, 16 years old and entering our 11th grade in September, will arrive at the end of August from Santiago, Chile. She is enthusiastic, accomplished, and very much looking forward to her experience in Arlington.
We need two or three host families to provide room and board for her for three or four months each: roughly September through Christmas, January through March, or April through June. The host family provides housing and meals, but all other expenses will be covered by the fees her parents have paid in advance, (including health and liability insurance), and the $100/month allowance that Arlington Rotary provides for incidentals and emergencies.
The program is well-established, well-supported by a team of experienced advisors (including attorneys) at the Rotary District level, and conform to all State Department and Rotary Rules and Procedures for exchange programs.
Claudia and her parents have agreed to and signed the well-documented Rules of Behavior and Conditions of Exchange. Our Rotary District hosts a number of students yearly and provides many opportunities for additional travel and social events for international students living in this District. This year the District Rotary Exchange Students were taken to visit the UN, New York City, and Washington DC, and to ski in New Hampshire. These exchange students and their families have, in turn, agreed to host students from the Rotary Clubs in the USA.
For the easiest transition for the student into life in Arlington, the Host Family ideally should live in Arlington and have a child in Arlington High School or Middle School. This is not a rule, but a suggestion. no Spanish language skills required! Claudia will speak English well and happily!
We must allow 90 days for the incoming student to obtain a Visa, so we are really in crunch-time! If you, or anyone you know, is interested in hosting a wonderful kid who can't wait to come to live in Arlington, please contact me immediately, any time of day or night, by phone or email!
